Learning to Lead — and Lift Others Along the Way
While I can easily point out my shortcomings, I’m making a more conscious effort to recognize and celebrate the well-rounded, capable, intelligent, strong, and kind woman I am—as a professional, colleague, mother, spouse, family member, and friend. I don’t take lightly the community of strong women I’ve chosen to surround myself with—and who have chosen me in return—and the lessons I learn from them every day.
And so, I am sharing the principles I rely on to navigate nearly any situation—personal or professional. They are simple, but powerful:
1. Think before you speak
Add value intentionally and when it’s appropriate. There’s no need to diminish your credibility by trying to prove what you’re unsure of. When your words and actions are purposeful, the outcome speaks for itself.
2. Carry yourself with confidence
Over time, your experiences will strengthen your knowledge and guide you through challenges. Confidence in yourself naturally evolves into the ability to lead others with confidence as well.
3. Admit your mistakes
Admit your mistakes. Take accountability for your actions—being trustworthy will always carry more weight than striving for perfection.
4. Say yes
Growth requires stretching beyond your comfort zone. Give yourself permission to step into opportunities, even when you don’t feel completely ready.
5. Elevate others
Especially as women, it’s essential to celebrate not only our own successes, but each other’s.Remember where you started and those who supported you along the way. Recognize small wins, offer encouragement, and open doors whenever you can—there is always room to make another seat at the table.
What It All Comes Down To...
Without a doubt, the most defining influence on who I am, is the privilege of being a mother to two young daughters. With a particularly inquisitive five-year-old, I’m constantly reminded to slow down, think before I speak, and communicate with clarity and intention. She challenges me to explain the “why” behind things in ways I never had to before.
I believe no matter what your “title" is or what season of life you are in, we can all benefit from the message I share with my girls every day: “you are smart, you are kind, you are special, and you can do anything you set your mind to.”
